8 Compaq TaskSmart W2200 Appliance Server Administration Guide IP Address The Internet protocol address that the domain name server translates into a domain name. The format of an IP address is four numbers separated by periods. Each number can be 0 to 255; for example: 1.150.12.130. Also, an identifier for a device on a TCP/IP network. TCP/IP networks route messages to the IP address of the destination. Within an isolated network, IP addresses can be randomly designated, as long as each is unique. Connecting a private network to the Internet requires a registered IP address to avoid duplication. The InterNIC Registration Service assigns Internet addresses. ISDN See Integrated Services Digital Network. ISO See International Standards Organization. ISO/OSI See Internationals Standards Organization Reference Model for Open Systems Interconnection. LAN See Local Area Network. Linux A version of UNIX that runs on x86, Alpha, and PowerPC machines. Due to its stability, Linux has gained popularity with ISPs as the operating system (OS) for hosting Web servers. Its usage is expected to grow as a server OS as well as for the desktop. Link A circuit or transmission path, including all equipment between a sender and a receiver on a network.
