1 Gigabit Ethernet Solutions Overview HP Cluster Platform solutions with a gigabit Ethernet interconnect support a variety of operating systems and software solutions. Gigabit Ethernet is an extension to the 10 Mbps and 100 Mbps IEEE 802.3 Ethernet standards. It builds on top of the Ethernet protocol, but increases transmission speed tenfold to 1000 Mbps, or 1 gigabit per second (Gbps). Gigabit Ethernet offers higher performance, lower maintenance costs, lower cost of entry and increased scalability when compared to other high-speed technologies. HP Cluster Platform Gigabit Ethernet solutions are available in high-density and modular configurations. High-density solutions are bounded hardware configurations with no more than 128 nodes. Modular solutions support up to 512 nodes (1024 processors). This chapter presents the following information: • A list of the supported HP Cluster Platform Gigabit Ethernet interconnects (Section 1.1) • A chart presenting the various Gigabit Ethernet Cluster Platform solutions (Section 1.3) • A description of high-density configurations (Section 1.5) • A description of modular configurations (Section 1.6) 1.1 Supported Gigabit Ethernet Interconnects With the exception of the control node, all nodes in an HP Gigabit Ethernet Cluster Platform solution must be connected to a gigabit system interconnect via a PCI host bus adapter (HBA) card. The interconnect provides a high-speed network for applications data traffic between nodes. The interconnect network can support cluster configurations with up to 512 nodes (1024 processors).
