Switch Module All non- management modules (those without a serial management port), are referred to as switch modules. HP Cluster Platform solutions use the HP ProCurve 9300 1000Base-T Module (16-port) as the switch module (J4895A), as show in Figure 8-4. The module provides 16 RJ-45 connectors for Cat5 cabling. You can connect each port to a 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps segment. The ports automatically detect the speed of the network and configure themselves accordingly. You also can manually configure a port for 100 Mbps or 1000 Mbps. The ports also support automatic MDI/MDIX crossover. The reset button, which is recessed to prevent it from being pushed accidentally, allows you to restart the system. Install the management module in any chassis slot. Each system requires at least one management module. Figure 8-5 shows the front panel of an EP gigabit management module (J4885A). Off - The power status is not good. The LEDs, described in Table 8-2, provide status information for the ports. Table 8-2 Management module port status LED Link Activity State On - Port is connected. Off - No port connection. On - Traffic is being transmitted and received on that port. Off - No traffic is being transmitted. Blinking - Traffic is being transmitted and received on that port. For added redundancy and reliability, you can install two redundant management modules. One of the redundant management modules is the active module while the other waits in standby mode to assume operation if the active module becomes unavailable. This can prevent downtime in the event that a management module stops operating. HP Cluster Platform solutions use the HP ProCurve 9300 EP Mini-GBIC Redundant Management Module (8-port) (JA4885A). 8.3 Installing and Removing a Module Modules are installed or removed when the switch is powered on or off. However, static electricity can severely damage the electronic components on the modules. When handling and installing 8.3 Installing and Removing a Module 61
