The following installation scenarios are described: ■ Installing the Driver in a New System on page 3-6 ■ Adding the Controller to an Existing System on page 3-7 Installing the Driver in a New System In this scenario, you are installing the Adaptec SCSI RAID controller in a new system that has no operating system. To install the driver: 1 Install and configure the controller and hard disk drives according to the instructions in Chapter 2. 2 Start the system, pressing Ctrl-A to enter the BIOS-based configuration utility. Use the configuration utility to create the RAID array and logical drive to which you will install Windows. For details, refer to Creating a RAID 5 Without an Operating System on page 2-9. 3 When the array has been built and is finished building, restart the system. Insert the Windows 2000 or XP setup CD as you restart to begin the Windows installation. 4 Early in the Windows installation, a screen with white text and a blue background appears after the hardware detection message, prompting you to install a third-party driver, press F6. Note: You only have 5 seconds to press the F6 key during the installation startup. A prompt appears at the bottom of the screen when F6 is active. Press F6 at this time; otherwise, you must restart the Windows installation process to complete this procedure correctly. The Windows installation will not be able to recognize the controller and array until the driver is in place. 3-6

Installing the Driver in a New System
In this scenario, you are installing the Adaptec SCSI RAID
controller in a new system that has no operating system.
To install the driver:
