4-1 Chapter 4 Running the System Configuration Utility The Compaq System Configuration Utility is used to configure the hardware installed in or connected to the server easily. This utility allows the server to know how each piece of hardware should be handled when communicating with it. The System Configuration Utility performs a wide range of configuration activities, including the following: s Configures PCI boards automatically s Provides switch and jumper settings s Resolves resource conflicts in areas such as memory, port addresses, and interrupts (IRQs) s Manages the installation of memory, processor upgrades, and mass storage devices such as hard drives, tape drives, and diskette drives s Sets and stores power-on features like date and time s Stores configuration information in nonvolatile memory s Assists in the installation of the operating system s Assists in running diagnostic tools such as TEST and INSPECT System Configuration Utility The Compaq System Configuration Utility can be run directly from the Compaq SmartStart and Support Software CD supplied with the SMART-2DH Array Controller Option Kit and the Compaq server. You may already have a version of this utility in the system partition of the boot disk; however, you will need Compaq SmartStart and Support Software CD version 3.40 or later. Compaq recommends that you use the version of the utility supplied on the CD because it is the latest one that supports the SMART-2DH Controller. Configuration Utility
