Connections 6 The external TAD must be plugged into the jack labeled EXT. Your machine cannot work correctly if you plug the TAD into a wall jack (unless you are using Distinctive Ring). a Place both hands under the plastic tabs on both sides of the machine to lift the scanner cover into the open position. b Plug the telephone line cord from the telephone wall jack into the jack labeled LINE. c Remove the protective cap (1) from the jack labeled EXT., and then plug the telephone line cord from the external TAD into the EXT. jack. (Make sure this cord is connected to the TAD at the TAD's telephone line jack, and not its handset jack.) Telephone services and external devices d (MFC-J650DW) Carefully guide the telephone line cord into the cable channel and out the back of the machine. (MFC-J870DW and MFC-J875DW) Carefully guide the telephone line cord from the LINE jack into the cable channel and out the back of the machine. Remove the protective cap (1) from the right side of the machine, and insert it into (2) so that it is not lost. Carefully guide the telephone line cord from the EXT. jack into the cable channel and out the right side of the machine. 6 1 1 2 e Lift the scanner cover to release the lock. Gently push the scanner cover support down and close the scanner cover using both hands. f Set your external TAD to four rings or less. (The machine's Ring Delay setting does not apply.) g Record the outgoing message on your external TAD. h Set the TAD to answer calls. i Set the Receive Mode to External TAD. (See Choose the correct Receive Mode on page 38.) 51
