STP, RSTP, and MSTP configuration and management 6 STP, RSTP, and MSTP configuration and management NOTE To see the minimum configuration required to enable FCoE on the Dell M8428-k switch, refer to Chapter 3, "Initial FCoE and CEE Configuration". NOTE You need to enter either the copy running-config startup-config command or the write memory command to save your configuration changes to Flash so that they are not lost if there is a system reload or power outage. Enabling STP, RSTP, or MSTP You enable STP to detect or avoid loops. STP is not required in a loop-free topology. You must turn off one form of STP before turning on another form. By default, STP, RSTP, and MSTP are not enabled. To enable STP, RSTP, or MSTP, perform the following steps from Privileged EXEC mode. 1. Enter the configure terminal command to access global configuration mode. 2. Enter the protocol command to enable STP, RSTP, or MSTP. switch(config)#protocol spanning-tree rstp Disabling STP, RSTP, or MSTP NOTE Using the no protocol spanning-tree command deletes the context and all the configurations defined within the context or protocol for the interface. To disable STP, RSTP, or MSTP, perform the following steps from Privileged EXEC mode. By default, STP, RSTP, and MSTP are not enabled. 1. Enter the configure terminal command to access global configuration mode. 2. Enter the protocol command to disable STP, RSTP, or MSTP. switch(config)#no protocol spanning-tree Shutting down STP, RSTP, or MSTP globally To shut down STP, RSTP, or MSTP globally, perform the following steps from Privileged EXEC mode. 1. Enter the configure terminal command to access global configuration mode. 2. Enter the shutdown command to globally shutdown STP, RSTP, or MSTP. The shutdown command below works in all three modes. switch(conf-mstp)#shutdown Dell Converged Enhanced Ethernet Administrator's Guide 51 53-1002116-01
