Connecting to an internal SAS port, Options 2 and 3 For instructions on connecting the SAS tape drive to an external SAS port, see "Connecting the tape drive to an external SAS port" on page 41. If your server does not have an external SAS port, you can connect the external tape drive to an internal port on the host controller or new HBA. This configuration may also be useful if the server does not have a spare, internal half-height bay for an internal tape drive. There are two connection options: • Use one of the recommended HP Infiniband or Mini-SAS cables to connect the tape drive to a spare internal SAS port on the host SAS controller or to an internal port on a new HBA, Option 2. • Use one of the recommended HP Infiniband or Mini-SAS cables to replace one of the existing SAS cables to the hard disk drive bays, Option 3. This requires some recabling inside the server, and also disconnects one of the hard disk drive bays. This configuration is suitable for some HP ProLiant servers only and, if it does disconnect a hard disk drive bay, you must be sure that the hard disk drive bay is not required for use. If it is required, install a new HBA. Figure 25 Example split SAS cable (connect to internal port) . NOTE: This cable is available with an internal Infiniband-style or mini-SAS connectors. (The drive connector is always an external Mini-SAS.) PCI slots The HP SAS cable for internal connection is threaded through the rear panel of the server and requires a spare PCI slot to accommodate the cable bracket and SAS connector to the tape drive. Refer to http://www.hp.com/go/connect for the latest information about HBAs and cables. Remove server cover IMPORTANT: These instructions apply ONLY to HP ProLiant servers with SAS controllers or HBAs that do not have an external SAS port. Do not remove the server cover if your server has an external SAS port. Go to "Connecting the tape drive to an external SAS port" on page 41 for instructions on installing in non-HP servers and in HP ProLiant servers with an HBA that supports external ports. 44 Installing an external SAS tape drive

Connecting to an internal SAS port, Options 2 and 3
For instructions on connecting the SAS tape drive to an external SAS port, see
Connecting the tape drive to an external SAS port
” on page 41.
If your server does not have an external SAS port, you can connect the external tape drive to an
internal port on the host controller or new HBA. This configuration may also be useful if the server
does not have a spare, internal half-height bay for an internal tape drive.
There are two connection options:
Use one of the recommended HP Infiniband or Mini-SAS cables to connect the tape drive to a
spare internal SAS port on the host SAS controller or to an internal port on a new HBA, Option
2.
Use one of the recommended HP Infiniband or Mini-SAS cables to replace one of the existing SAS
cables to the hard disk drive bays, Option 3. This requires some recabling inside the server, and
also disconnects one of the hard disk drive bays. This configuration is suitable for some HP ProLiant
servers only and, if it does disconnect a hard disk drive bay, you must be sure that the hard disk
drive bay is not required for use. If it is required, install a new HBA.

NOTE:
This cable is available with an internal Infiniband-style or mini-SAS connectors. (The drive connector
is always an external Mini-SAS.)
PCI slots
The HP SAS cable for internal connection is threaded through the rear panel of the server and requires
a spare PCI slot to accommodate the cable bracket and SAS connector to the tape drive.
