Chapter 5. Setting up Serial over LAN for the HC10 blade workstation Serial over LAN (SOL) provides a means of managing the blade workstation remotely by using a command-line interface (CLI) over a Telnet or Secure Shell (SSH) connection. SOL provides console redirection for both BIOS and the blade workstation operating system. The SOL feature redirects serial-connection data over a LAN without the need for special cabling. The SOL connection enables the blade workstation to be managed from any remote location that has network access. SOL has the following advantages: v Remote administration without keyboard, video, or mouse v Reduced cabling and no need for a serial concentrator v A standard Telnet interface that eliminates the need for special client software The IBM BladeCenter management-module command-line interfaces provide access to the text-console command prompt on each blade workstation through a SOL connection, enabling the blade workstation to be managed from a remote location. Hardware and firmware requirements The blade workstation is SOL capable. You must configure the blade workstation to enable SOL operation. The blade workstation supports SOL sessions on VLAN 4095 only; make sure to configure the SOL function to operate on VLAN 4095. Hardware requirements For the HC10 Type 7996 blade workstation, SOL uses the Ethernet 1 network interface (Planar Ethernet) and an Ethernet I/O module in the BladeCenter unit I/O bay 1 to communicate. Software requirements Make sure that you are using the latest versions of device drivers, firmware, and BIOS code for the blade workstation, advanced management module, and other BladeCenter components (see the minimum version levels in "Firmware updates" on page 36). Go to http://www.ibm.com/systems/support/ for the latest information about upgrading the device drivers, firmware, and BIOS for BladeCenter components. The latest instructions are in the documentation that comes with the updates. General configuration This section provides instructions for configuring the blade workstation to operate using SOL, where that information differs from the information in the BladeCenter Serial over LAN Setup Guide. The BladeCenter Serial over LAN Setup Guide is on the IBM BladeCenter Documentation CD that comes with the blade workstation.
