If the ALLOCATION LENGTH field in the CDB is too small to transfer all of the identifier, the length is not adjusted to reflect the truncation. The identifier length initially equals zero, and is changed only by a successful SETDEVICE IDENTIFIER command. The IDENTIFIER field contains a vendor specific value. The value reported is the last value written by a successful SET DEVICE IDENTIFIER command. The value of the identifier is changed only by a SET DEVICE IDENTIFIER command. The identifier value persist through resets, power cycles, media format operations. The drive returns the same Identifier to all initiators on all ports. The execution of a REPORT DEVICE IDENTIFIER requires the enabling of a nonvolatile memory within the logical unit. If the nonvolatile memory is not ready, the drive returns CHECK CONDITION status, rather than wait for the device to become ready. The sense key is set to NOT READY and the additional sense data is set as described in the TEST UNIT READY command.
