Chapter 3. Recovering software The Rescue and Recovery™ program product provides a number of recovery solutions to meet almost any situation. Portions of the Rescue and Recovery program program reside with your other Windows® programs, while other portions reside in a separate, hidden area of your hard disk specifically designed for recovery. This chapter will help you become familiar with some of the recovery solutions provided by the Rescue and Recovery program program installed on your computer. Tasks to do before you encounter a problem v Create Product Recovery discs. See ″Creating and using Product Recovery discs.″ v Create rescue media. See "Creating and using rescue media" on page 16. v Back up your hard disk periodically. See "Backup and recovery" on page 12. v Create a Recovery Repair diskette. See "Solving recovery problems" on page 15. Note: The rescue disc and first disc of the Product Recovery discs and backup discs are startable (bootable) and can be started in any type of CD or DVD drive except for a DVD-RAM media. Tasks to do after you encounter a problem The starting point for most recovery tasks is the Rescue and Recovery workspace. See "Using the rescue and recovery workspace" on page 13. Creating and using product recovery discs If your computer is equipped with a recordable CD or DVD drive, you can create a set of Product Recovery discs that enable you to restore the contents of the hard disk to the same state as when the computer was originally shipped from the factory. Product Recovery discs are useful if you transfer the computer to another area, sell the computer, recycle the computer, or as a last resort put the computer in an operational state after all other methods of recovery have failed. It is a good idea to create a set of Product Recovery discs as soon as possible. Note: Your Microsoft® Windows license permits you to create only one set of Product Recovery discs, so it is important that you store the discs in a safe place after you make them.
