Prestige 1100 Internet Access Router 3.7 LANs & WANs A LAN (Local Area Network) is a computer network limited to the immediate area, usually the same building or floor of a building. A WAN (Wide Area Network), on the other hand is an outside connection to another network or the Internet. 3.7.1 LANs, WANs and the Prestige The actual physical connection determines whether the Prestige ports are LAN or WAN ports. There are two separate IP networks, one inside, the LAN network; the other outside, the WAN network as shown next. LAN LAN IP WAN IP The interface to the Internet or a remote node can be any hardware port including an Ethernet port. INTERNET Prestige 1100 The interface to the LAN is Ethernet.
