When your vehicle is being towed, have the ignition key OFF. The steering wheel should clamped in a be straight-ahead position, with a clamping device designed for towing service. Do not use the vehicle's steering column lock for this. The transaxle should be in NEUTRAL (N) and the parking brake released. The ignition key must be inthe OFF position to keep the automatic door locks from locking during towing. Don't have your vehicle towed on thefront wheels, unless you 'must. If the vehicle mustbe towed on the front wheels,' (seespeed and distancerestrictions later in this section)farther than 50 miles (80 km) your transaxle will be damaged. If these limits must be be exceeded, thenthe front wheels have to supported on a dolly. r 1 ' A vehicle can fall from a car carr if it isn't adequately secured. This can cause a collision, serious personal injury andvehicle damage. The vehicle should be tightly secured with chains or steel cables before it is transported. Don't use substitutes (ropes, leather straps, canvas webbing, etc.) that canbe cut by sharp edges underneath the towedvehicle. Always use T-hooks inserted in the T-hook slots. Neveruse J-hooks. They will damage drivetrain and suspension components.
