Prohibited cable assemblies Some cable assemblies are prohibited in the USB specifications and are not recommended as they may not work in all instances. For example, passive extension cable assembly: a cable that has a Type-A plug on one end and a Type-A receptacle on the other, or a Type-B plug on one end and a Type-B receptacle on the other.
