Adjusting the stitch length Adjusting the thread tension The stitch length can be adjusted to make the stitch coarser or finer. You may need to change the thread tension, depending on the fabric and thread being used. ■ Correct thread tension The upper thread and the bobbin thread should cross near the center of the fabric. Only the upper thread should be visible from the right side of the fabric, and only the bobbin thread should be visible from the wrong side of the fabric. 2 a Each press of makes the stitch finer (shorter). b Each press of makes the stitch coarser (longer). Memo z means the setting cannot be adjusted. z Press to return the setting to its default. CAUTION z If the stitches are bunched together, increase the stitch length. Continuing to sew with the stitches bunched together may result in the needle bending or breaking. c d a Wrong side of fabric b Right side of fabric c Upper thread d Bobbin thread ■ Upper thread is too tight If the bobbin thread is visible from the right side of the fabric, the upper thread is too tight. Note z If the bobbin thread was incorrectly threaded, the upper thread may be too tight.
