Page 245 highlights

Note: See Chapter 8, "Parts listing, Type 8870," on page 249 to determine which components are replaceable by the customer, and which components should be replaced by an IBM field service technician. Monitor problems Symptom FRU/action The screen is blank. 1. Verify that: v The computer power cord is plugged into the server, and into a working electrical outlet or power distribution unit. v The monitor cables are connected properly. Note: For server models with a Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA installed, the integrated video controller on the server is disabled. You must connect the monitor to the video port on the Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA. v The monitor is turned on and the Brightness and Contrast controls are adjusted correctly. Note: When two servers are connected in a 16-way configuration, the DVD-ROM drive, diskette drive, keyboard, USB ports (except for Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA functionality), mouse, and video are disabled on the secondary server. Important: In some memory configurations, the 3-3-3 beep code might sound during POST followed by a blank display screen. If this occurs and the Boot Fail Count feature in the Start Options of the Configuration/Setup Utility program is set to Enabled (its default setting), you must restart the server three times to force the system BIOS code to reset the CMOS values to the default configuration (memory connector or bank of connectors enabled). 2. Make sure that damaged BIOS code is not affecting the video; see "Recovering BIOS code" on page 75. 3. If you have verified these items and the screen remains blank, replace: a. Monitor b. I/O board Only the cursor appears. v See "Undetermined problems" on page 246. The monitor works when you turn on the computer but goes blank when you start some application programs. 1. Verify that: v The application program is not setting a display mode higher than the capability of the monitor. v The primary monitor cable is connected to the server. v You installed the necessary device drivers for the applications. 2. Monitor. 3. I/O board. Note: When two servers are connected in a 16-way configuration, the DVD-ROM drive, diskette drive, keyboard, USB ports (except for Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA functionality), mouse, and video are disabled on the secondary server. Symptom
FRU/action
The

1.
Verify
that:
v
The
computer
power
cord
is
plugged
into
the
server,
and
into
a
working
electrical
outlet
or
power
distribution
unit.
v
The
monitor
cables
are
connected
properly.
Note:
For
server
models
with
a
Remote
Supervisor
Adapter
II-EXA
installed,
the
integrated
video
controller
on
the
server
is
disabled.
You
must
connect
the
monitor
to
the
video
port
on
the
Remote
Supervisor
Adapter
II-EXA.
v
The
monitor
is
turned
on
and
the
Brightness

to
reset
the
CMOS

2.
Make
sure
that
damaged
BIOS
code
is
not
affecting
the
video;
see
“Recovering
BIOS
