Obtaining and decompressing firmware NOTE: The following steps describe how to download firmware. Web retrieval procedures may be subject to change. To access the latest Fabric OS 5.2.x firmware, configuration files and MIB files go to the following HP web site: http://h18006.www1.hp.com/storage/saninfrastructure/index.html You must decompress the firmware (using the UNIX tar command for .tar files, the gunzip command for all .gz files, or a Windows unzip program for all .zip files) before you can use the firmwareDownload command to update the firmware on your equipment. When you unpack the downloaded firmware it expands into a directory that is named according to the version of Fabric OS it contains. For example, if you download and unzip Fabric OS 5.3.x.zip, it expands into a directory called 5.3.x. Fabric OS 5.3.0 administrator guide

Obtaining and decompressing firmware
NOTE:
The following steps describe how to download firmware. Web retrieval procedures may be
subject to change.
To access the latest Fabric OS 5.2.x firmware, configuration files and MIB files go to the following HP web
site:
You must decompress the firmware (using the UNIX
tar
command for
.tar
files, the gunzip command
for all
.gz
files, or a Windows unzip program for all
.zip
files) before you can use the
firmwareDownload
command to update the firmware on your equipment.
When you unpack the downloaded firmware it expands into a directory that is named according to the
version of Fabric OS it contains. For example, if you download and unzip
Fabric OS 5.3.x.zip
, it expands
into a directory called
5.3.x
. When you issue the
firmwareDownload
command, there is an automatic
search for the correct package file type associated with your switch. Specify only the path to the
5.3.x
directory.
Performing firmware download on switches
4/16 SAN Switch and 4/8 SAN Switch, Brocade 4Gb SAN Switch for HP p-Class BladeSystem, Brocade
4Gb SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem, SAN Switch 2/8V, SAN Switch 2/16V, SAN Switch 2/32,
SAN Switch 4/32, SAN Switch 4/32B, 4/64 SAN Switch, 4/32B SAN Switch and 400 MP Router
maintain primary and secondary partitions for firmware. The
firmwareDownload
command defaults to
an autocommit option that automatically copies the firmware from one partition to the other.
You should not override autocommit under normal circumstances; use the default. Refer to
Testing and
restoring firmware-on Directors
, page 186 for details about overriding the autocommit option.
Summary of the firmware download process
The following summary describes the default behavior after you enter the
firmwareDownload
command
(without options) on 4/16 SAN Switch and 4/8 SAN Switch, Brocade 4Gb SAN Switch for HP p-Class
BladeSystem, Brocade 4Gb SAN Switch for HP c-Class BladeSystem, SAN Switch 2/8V, SAN Switch
2/16V, SAN Switch 2/32, SAN Switch 4/32, SAN Switch 4/32B, 4/64 SAN Switch and 400 MP Router
models:
The Fabric OS downloads the firmware to the secondary partition.
The system performs a high-availability reboot (
haReboot
). After the
haReboot
, the former
secondary partition is the primary partition.
The system replicates the firmware from the primary to the secondary partition.
Software application (SA) software is upgraded only when
firmwareDownload
is issued with the
SA option. Refer to the application’s manual for further information.
