Starting Your Explorer 3. Turn the ignition key to LOCK. 4. Remove the key. If your vehicle's gearshift lever is mounted on the floor: 1. Put the gearshift in 1 (First). 2. Turn the ignition key to OFF. 3. Set the parking brake fully before removing your foot from the service brake. 4. Push and hold in the key release button. 5. Turn the key to LOCK. 6. Remove the key. RWARNING Always set the parking brake fully and make sure that the gearshift is latched in P (Park) (automatic transmission) or 1 (First) (manual transmission). RWARNING Do not leave children, unreliable adults, or pets alone in your vehicle. They could accidentally injure themselves or others through inadvertent operation of the vehicle. Further, on hot, sunny days, temperatures in a closed vehicle could quickly become high enough to cause severe and possibly fatal injuries to people as well as animals. 69
