Configure a Unix System as a Syslog Server Configure a UNIX system as a syslog server by adding the following lines to /etc/syslog.conf on the Unix system and assigning write permissions to the file. • on a 4.1 BSD UNIX system, add the line: local7.debugging /var/log/force10.log • on a 5.7 SunOS UNIX system, add the line: local7.debugging /var/adm/force10.log In the lines above, local7 is the logging facility level and debugging is the severity level. Change System Logging Settings You can change the default settings of the system logging by changing the severity level and the storage location. The default is to log all messages up to debug level, that is, all system messages. By changing the severity level in the logging commands, you control the number of system messages logged.
