Managing Your System 6 Protecting against power source problems Surge suppressors, line conditioners, and uninterruptible power supplies can help protect your system against power source problems. Surge suppressors During a power surge, the voltage level of electricity coming into your system can increase far above normal levels and cause data loss or system damage. Protect your server and peripherals by connecting them to a surge suppressor, which will absorb voltage surges and prevent them from reaching your server. When purchasing a surge suppressor: s Make sure the surge suppressor meets the appropriate product safety certification for your location, such as Underwriters Laboratories (UL). s Check the maximum amount of voltage the suppressor allows to pass through the line. The lower the voltage that the suppressor allows to pass through, the better the protection for your system. Protecting against power source problems 91
