Making Connections Connecting External Components To connect audio devices Note There is a built-in microphone located just below the blue standby button. You can use it to record voice, sound, and music. You can also plug in an audio input source (such as a CD player or an external microphone) or an audio output device (such as external speakers or headphones). • Attach the audio cable to the appropriate port on the computer; see "To identify the ports" on page 67. When you plug a device into the microphone port, the built-in microphone automatically turns off. When you plug a device into the audio out port, the built-in speakers automatically turn off. To use an external monitor You can connect your computer to an external monitor and then use either display-or both displays at once. To connect an external monitor 1. Click Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off. 2. Connect the monitor cable from the monitor to the VGA port on the rear of the computer. 3. Connect the monitor to a power source and turn it on. 4. Press the blue standby button to turn on the computer. To switch the display to the external monitor • Close the computer lid. OR • Press Fn+F5 to cycle through the display options: notebook display, external monitor, both. OR • Click Start, All Programs, Hewlett-Packard, Notebook, HP Display Settings, HP Display Settings. To connect audio devices
There is a built-in microphone located just below the blue standby button. You can use it
to record voice, sound, and music. You can also plug in an audio input source (such as a
CD player or an external microphone) or an audio output device (such as external
speakers or headphones).
Attach the audio cable to the appropriate port on the computer; see “To identify the
ports” on page 67.
Note
When you plug a device into the microphone port, the built-in microphone
automatically turns off. When you plug a device into the audio out port, the built-in
speakers automatically turn off.
To use an external monitor
You can connect your computer to an external monitor and then use either display—or
both displays at once.
To connect an external monitor
1. Click Start, Turn Off Computer, Turn Off.
2.
Connect the monitor cable from the monitor to the VGA port on the rear of the
computer.
3.
Connect the monitor to a power source and turn it on.
4.
Press the blue standby button to turn on the computer.
To switch the display to the external monitor
Close the computer lid.
OR
Press Fn+F5 to cycle through the display options: notebook display, external monitor,
both.

Click Start, All Programs, Hewlett-Packard, Notebook, HP Display Settings, HP
