encryption The server uses an optional 40- or 128-bit encryption key. While the computer and access point are associated, data transmissions can be encrypted using this key. Only users with the correct key can decrypt the data. When encryption is in use, the access point issues an encrypted challenge packet to any device attempting to associate with it. The device must use its key to encrypt the correct response in order to authenticate its transmissions and gain network access. SSID SSID is a naming convention that provides basic access control to the network. Each wireless network is assigned an SSID. This information is required for any wireless computer to associate with another computer or any access point on the wireless network. passphrase A passphrase is a string of characters or words that are used by a WEP algorithm to generate the WEP key. Note Implementation of WEP algorithms may vary from one vendor to another. signal range The range in which devices can communicate with the print server depends upon the environment in which the print server is installed. Typical usage in an office is up to a maximum of 100 feet (30 meters). Note Performance speed of the wireless transmission reduces as the distance between devices increases. 4
