15 Chapter15. Performance considerations In this chapter we emphasize the importance of a complete tuning methodology. We hope you will gain an understanding of all the related components and understand the importance of making changes one at a time, then retesting against a base-line performance number. Misinterpreting the results of performance-related testing is also common. Ensure that you follow a logical and documented process. Careful and concise are two important words when describing a tuning exercise. We discuss parameters that can be tuned to get the maximum performance during backup, archive, restore, and retrieve operations. Remember that an IBM Tivoli Storage Manager implementation is typically quite complex, covering a range of variables that could affect performance.
