SysBack is a comprehensive system backup, restore, and reinstallation tool for AIX. It is simple to use and highly effective in partitioned or non-partitioned environments, as well as in a cluster environment composed of multiple pSeries systems. We discuss the following concepts: An introduction to SysBack Partition backup and reinstallation (system recovery) Cloning backup images between partitions or stand-alone systems SysBack Bare Machine Recovery with Tivoli Storage Manager environments Additional information regarding SysBack SysBack has many features that give you the flexibility to administer partitioning-capable pSeries servers in a partitioned environment. This section covers several of the most beneficial features: Remote backup, restore, and installation capabilities SysBack provides the ability to back up a system or partition to any other system or partition in the network running AIX. This feature enables you to have one or more partitions act as backup servers. With remote backup and restore capabilities, you no longer have to be concerned with having a backup device assigned to any given partition. In addition to remote backup and restore capabilities, SysBack enables you to install your backup images over the network. This functionality is facilitated by the network boot feature. SysBack can provide its own network boot resources or a wrapper around an existing NIM configuration. In contrast, mksysb can run remotely, but only to disk. Backups to a tape, CD, or DVD require a locally attached device. In order to perform a network install of a mksysb, you must also configure and use a NIM environment. Chapter 20.
