Troubleshooting charts The following table lists problem symptoms and suggested solutions. Device DVD-ROM drive The DVD-ROM drive is not recognized. Diskette drive Diskette drive in-use light stays on, or the server bypasses the diskette drive. Suggested action Verify that: v The primary IDE channel is enabled in the Configuration/Setup Utility program. v All cables and jumpers are installed correctly. v The correct device driver is installed for the DVD-ROM drive. Note: When two servers are connected in a 16-way configuration, the DVD-ROM, diskette drive, keyboard port, USB ports (except for Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA functionality), mouse, and video are disabled on the secondary server. If there is a diskette in the drive, verify that: v The diskette drive is enabled in the Configuration/Setup Utility program. v The diskette is good and not damaged. (Try another diskette if you have one.) v The diskette contains the necessary files to start the server. v Your software program is working properly. Note: When two servers are connected in a 16-way configuration, the DVD-ROM, diskette drive, keyboard port, USB ports (except for Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA functionality), mouse, and video are disabled on the secondary server. If the diskette drive in-use light stays on or the server continues to bypass the diskette drive, call for service. Other devices Call for service. Problems such as broken cover locks or indicator lights not working. Intermittent problems A problem occurs only occasionally and is difficult to detect. Verify that: v All cables and cords are connected securely to the rear of the server and attached options. v When the server is turned on, air is flowing from the rear of the server at the fan grille. If there is no air flow, the fan is not working. This causes the server to overheat and shut down. v Ensure that the SCSI bus and devices are configured correctly and that the last external device in each SCSI chain is terminated correctly. Keyboard, mouse, or pointing-device All or some keys on the keyboard do not work. If the problem remains, call for service. v Make sure that the keyboard cable is properly connected to the server. v Make sure that the server and the monitor are turned on. v Try using another keyboard. Note: When two servers are connected in a 16-way configuration, the DVD-ROM, diskette drive, keyboard port, USB ports (except for Remote Supervisor Adapter II-EXA functionality), mouse, and video are disabled on the secondary server. If the problem remains, call for service. Chapter 6. Solving problems 71

problem
symptoms
and
suggested
solutions.
Device
Suggested
action
DVD-ROM
drive
Verify
that:
v
The
primary
IDE
channel
is
enabled
in
the
Configuration/Setup
Utility
program.
v
All
cables
and
jumpers
are
installed
correctly.
v
The
correct
device
driver
is
installed
for
the
DVD-ROM
drive.
Note:
When
two
servers
are
connected
in
a
16-way
configuration,
the
DVD-ROM,
diskette
drive,
keyboard
port,
USB
ports
(except
for

Adapter
II-EXA
functionality),
mouse,
and
video
are
disabled
on
the
secondary
server.
The
DVD-ROM
drive
is
not
recognized.
Diskette
drive
If
there
is
a
diskette
in
the
drive,
verify
that:
v
The
diskette
drive
is
enabled
in
the
Configuration/Setup
Utility
program.
v
The
diskette
is
good
and
not
damaged.
(Try
another
diskette
if
you
have
one.)
v
The
diskette
contains
the
necessary
files
to
start
the
server.
v
Your
software
program
is
working
properly.
Note:
When
two
servers
are
connected
in
a
16-way
configuration,
the
DVD-ROM,
diskette

port,
USB
ports
(except
for
Remote

If
the
diskette
drive
in-use
light
stays
on
or
the

continues
to
bypass
the
diskette
drive,
call
for
service.
Diskette

Call
for
service.
Problems
such
as
broken
cover
locks
or
indicator

not
working.
Intermittent
problems
Verify
that:
v
All

are
connected
securely
to
the
rear

v
When
the
server
is
turned
on,
air
is
flowing
from
the
rear
of
the
server
at
the
fan

If
there
is
no
air
flow,
the
fan
is
not
working.
This
causes
the
server
to
overheat
and
shut
down.
v
Ensure
that
the
SCSI
bus
and
devices
are
configured
correctly
and
that
the
last
external
device
in
each
SCSI
chain
is
terminated
correctly.
If
the
problem
remains,
call
for
service.
A
problem
occurs
only
occasionally
and
is
difficult
to
detect.
Keyboard,
mouse,
or
