185 Exploring Your Options Using SmartMedia cards Hot swapping precautions Although you can insert a PC Card at any time, to avoid data loss never remove a card while it is in use. For example: ❖ Never remove an ATA card while the system is accessing it. ❖ Never remove a network card while you are connected to a network. ❖ Never remove a SCSI card while any of the SCSI devices connected to it are operating. DEFINITION: SCSI is an acronym for Small Computer Systems Interface. A single SCSI PC Card enables you to connect several SCSI devices, such as a scanner or digital camera to your computer. Before removing a PC Card, shut it down by clicking the PC Card (PCMCIA) icon on the taskbar. Once the PC Card has stopped, you can safely remove it. Using SmartMedia cards Your computer supports the use of SmartMedia cards which are super compact memory cards that are highly portable and can be carried in a pocketbook or credit card holder. SmartMedia cards are used to exchange data with other portable devices, such as digital cameras and Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs). They are also found in electronic musical instruments, voice recorders, faxes, printers, scanners, word processors and handy terminals.
