92 Learning the Basics Powering down the computer indefinitely. Restoring information from the hard drive takes longer than restoring it from memory. When you start up again, the computer runs a self-test, loads the operating system, and then returns to the state in which you left it. Factors to consider when choosing Hibernation mode: ❖ While in Hibernation mode, the computer uses no battery power. ❖ Because the state of the system is held on the hard disk, no data is lost if the battery discharges. ❖ Restarting from Hibernation mode uses less time and battery power than restarting from Turn Off. ❖ Restarting from Hibernation mode uses a little more time and battery power than restarting from Stand By because information is being retrieved from the hard disk instead of memory. ❖ When starting up again, the computer returns to the state in which you left it, including all open programs and files you were using. Stand By command The Stand By command puts the computer into a powersaving mode. Stand By holds the current state of the computer in memory so that, when you restart the computer, you can continue working from where you left off. Factors to consider when choosing Stand By: ❖ While in Stand By mode, the computer uses some battery power. A fully charged battery will last up to eight hours in Stand By mode. NOTE: If you power down using the Stand By command and the battery discharges fully, your information will be lost. Be sure to save your work often.
