Communications Modem All notebook models include an RJ-11 telephone jack, and some models ship with a preinstalled modem. A modem cable with RJ-11 connectors at each end is included with select models. You need a modem cable to connect a modem. If your model did not include a modem cable, a modem cable can be purchased from most computer or electronics retailers. If you purchased a notebook with an internal modem in a country where RJ-11 telephone jacks are not standard, a country-specific modem adapter is included with the notebook. An internal modem supports: ■ All applications supported by the operating system. ■ V.34 ITU (International Telecommunications Union) analog modem recommendations for speeds up to 33.6 Kbps. ■ V.44 data compression algorithm. ■ V.90/V.92 ITU digital/analog modem pair recommendations for speeds up to 56 Kbps. The digital/analog modem pair rates allow faster downloads only from compliant digital sources. Maximum achievable download rates are currently unknown, may not reach 56 Kbps, and will vary with line conditions.
