Applying Power to the HP Server Powering Up the Server 1. Turn on power to the monitor connected to the HP Server. Turning on the monitor first ensures that video output auto-configures properly as the server boots up. 2. Press the power button on the front control panel. See Figure 1-1. When you press the power button, the server powers up and loads the operating system. The system runs a set of power-on self tests (POST) during this process. For details refer to Chapter 6, "Troubleshooting." Powering Down the Server 1. Log off all users and, if necessary, back up files. o Schedule the power down for a time when the server being down will affect the fewest users. o If you will be performing a hardware or software upgrade, ensure the server's data has been backed up. o Follow instructions in your network operating system (NOS) documentation to shut down all networking software and applications. WARNING The power supply will continue to provide standby current to the HP Server until the power cable is disconnected from the rear panel. 2. Press the power button on the HP Server's control panel when prompted by the operating system. Normally this completes the power-down procedure. 5
