28 CHAPTER 2 Making the Switch from PageMaker to InDesign You can also create master text frames-text frames placed on the master page, rather than a document page-when you create a new document in InDesign. Master text frames are useful for documents with a standard text ayout across all or most pages, but they behave differently than normal text frames, and can take some getting used to. For more information about using text frames or master text frames, or for details on threading text frames, see InDesign Help. You set text-frame options, such as inset spacing and vertical justification, using the Text Frame Options dialog box in InDesign. This dialog box contains some, but not all, of the options found in PageMaker's Frame Options dialog box. In InDesign, options not included in the Text Frame Options dialog box can be set elsewhere as follows: • To set horizontal alignment, use the Paragraph palette or the Control palette in Paragraph mode. • To resize a text frame to fit the text inside, or to scale a graphic to fit its frame (or vice versa), use commands on the Object > Fitting menu. For more information about text alignment, fitting a frame to text, or aligning an object within a graphics frame, see InDesign Help. Importing text To import text, copy and paste it from another application, or use the Place command. If you use the Place command, you can select Show Import Options (similar to Show Filter Preferences in PageMaker) to display a set of options for the file type being imported. For example, if you're importing a Microsoft Word file, you can select Remove Text and Table Formatting to import the text cleanly. When you import text, you can determine whether the text is linked. In the Text panel of the Preferences dialog box, you can select Create Links When Placing Text and Spreadsheet Files to set up a link. By default, text is embedded, not linked. Editing text in Layout view and story editor Like PageMaker, InDesign includes a story editor for editing text in a word-processor environment, so you can focus on the content itself, without worrying about the document layout. The story editor in InDesign closely resembles the story editor in PageMaker: It includes a sidebar displaying paragraph styles applied to text, and flows text in one continuous column without interruptions for page or column breaks.
