Previewing color separations on-screen In InDesign, you can preview color separations, overprinting, and ink coverage on-screen to spot potential problems before incurring the expense of printing separations. PageMaker does not provide this capability. InDesign also provides helpful information about a document or book, such as the inks it uses, the first page on which a font appears, and print settings. Then you can package your InDesign documents for print or Web handoff, or export them as Adobe PDF files. Using the Ink Manager The Ink Manager offers nonbinding control over which inks are printed. For example, the Ink Manager lets you convert spot inks to their process-color equivalents to reduce costs. This feature is especially useful for commercial printers and prepress service providers who need to change how inks are printed from InDesign without changing colors in the document itself. Single separation preview Preflighting and packaging Similar to the PageMaker "Save for Service Provider" feature, the "Package" feature in InDesign lets you save your document with the fonts and linked files needed to correctly print the document. As the document is packaged, InDesign performs a final preflight check to alert you to any potential problems, such as a missing font or graphic. Working with service providers As in PageMaker, when you hand off an InDesign document to a service provider, you can give the service provider the InDesign document, a PostScript file, or a PDF file. Printing high-end design files Outputting high-end design files in InDesign CS is efficient and reliable. Features include: • Expanded printer driver support • A consistent cross-platform printing experience • Built-in printing support for advanced design features, such as transparency • Additional output options, such as the ability to print thumbnails

Previewing color separations on-screen
In InDesign, you can preview color separations,
overprinting, and ink coverage on-screen to spot
potential problems before incurring the expense of
printing separations.
PageMaker does not provide
this capability.
Single separation preview
Preflighting and packaging
Similar to the PageMaker “Save for Service
Provider” feature, the “Package” feature in
InDesign lets you save your document with the
fonts and linked files needed to correctly print the
document. As the document is packaged,
InDesign performs a final preflight check to alert
you to any potential problems, such as a missing
font or graphic.
InDesign also provides helpful information about
a document or book, such as the inks it uses, the
first page on which a font appears, and print
settings. Then you can package your InDesign
documents for print or Web handoff, or export
them as Adobe PDF files.
Using the Ink Manager
The Ink Manager offers nonbinding control over
which inks are printed. For example, the Ink
Manager lets you convert spot inks to their
process-color equivalents to reduce costs. This
feature is especially useful for commercial printers
and prepress service providers who need to change
how inks are printed from InDesign without
changing colors in the document itself.
Working with service providers
As in PageMaker, when you hand off an InDesign
document to a service provider, you can give the
service provider the InDesign document, a
PostScript file, or a PDF file.
Printing high-end design files
Outputting high-end design files in InDesign CS is
efficient and reliable. Features include:
Expanded printer driver support
A consistent cross-platform printing experience
Built-in printing support for advanced design
features, such as transparency
Additional output options, such as the ability to
print thumbnails
