Glossary This glossary defines terms used in this guide or related to this product and is not a comprehensive glossary of computer terms. Accelerated deduplication appliance automigration A method of deduplication that compares the most recent version of a backup to the previous version. See also deduplication. An intelligent device programmed to perform a single well-defined function. Appliances differ from general-purpose computers in that their firmware is normally customized for the function they perform, pre-loaded by a vendor, and not alterable by the user. Data intended for tape storage is written to virtual tape. After the backups are complete, data is written to physical tape in the background. One virtual tape emulates one physical tape to the host system. Data is held on the virtual tape, which greatly improves restore times over the slow loading process of a robotic library. bandwidth Also known as data transfer rate. The amount of data that can be carried from one point to another in a given time period. A real communications path usually consists of a succession of links, each with its own bandwidth. If one of these is much slower than the rest, it is said to be a bandwidth bottleneck. cartridge chassis command line interface (CLI) 1) A removable storage module that contains magnetic or optical disks, magnetic tape, or memory chips. (2) Software emulation of the behavior and contents of a physical tape cartridge on alternate media, such as disk, is called a virtual tape or virtual media. See also virtual tape. A metal box that houses computer hardware. A user interface to an application that accepts typed-in commands one line at a time, typically through a console screen. data backup The activity of copying files or databases so that they will be preserved in case of equipment failure or other catastrophe. The retrieval of files you backed up is called restoring files. See also data restore. data compression A software or hardware process that shrinks data files (by encoding data) so that they occupy less storage space, and can be transmitted faster and easier. See also bandwidth. data migration The process of moving data from one storage device to another, such as migrating data from virtual media to physical media. HP StorageWorks 343

Glossary
This glossary defines terms used in this guide or related to this product and is not a comprehensive
glossary of computer terms.
Accelerated
deduplication
A method of deduplication that compares the most recent version of a backup
to the previous version.
See also
deduplication.
appliance
An intelligent device programmed to perform a single well-defined function.
Appliances differ from general-purpose computers in that their firmware is
normally customized for the function they perform, pre-loaded by a vendor, and
not alterable by the user.
automigration
Data intended for tape storage is written to virtual tape. After the backups are
complete, data is written to physical tape in the background. One virtual tape
emulates one physical tape to the host system. Data is held on the virtual tape,
which greatly improves restore times over the slow loading process of a robotic
library.
bandwidth
Also known as data transfer rate. The amount of data that can be carried from
one point to another in a given time period.
A real communications path usually consists of a succession of links, each with
its own bandwidth. If one of these is much slower than the rest, it is said to be
a bandwidth bottleneck.
cartridge
1) A removable storage module that contains magnetic or optical disks, magnetic
tape, or memory chips.
(2) Software emulation of the behavior and contents of a physical tape cartridge
on alternate media, such as disk, is called a virtual tape or virtual media.
See also
virtual tape.
chassis
A metal box that houses computer hardware.
command line
interface (CLI)
A user interface to an application that accepts typed-in commands one line at a
time, typically through a console screen.
data backup
The activity of copying files or databases so that they will be preserved in case
of equipment failure or other catastrophe. The retrieval of files you backed up is
called restoring files.
See also
data restore.
data compression
A software or hardware process that shrinks data files (by encoding data) so
that they occupy less storage space, and can be transmitted faster and easier.
See also
bandwidth.
data migration
The process of moving data from one storage device to another, such as migrating
data from virtual media to physical media.
