94 Learning the Basics Powering down the computer Standby command The Standby command puts the computer into a powersaving mode. Standby holds the current state of the computer in memory so that, when you restart the computer, you can continue working from where you left off. Factors to consider when choosing Standby: ❖ While in Standby mode, the computer uses some battery power. A fully charged battery will last up to eight hours in Standby mode. NOTE: If you power down using the Standby command and the battery discharges fully, your information will be lost. Be sure to save your work often. ❖ Restarting from Standby mode uses less time and battery power than restarting from Turn Off or Hibernation mode. ❖ When starting up again, the computer returns to the state in which you left it, including all open programs and files you were using. TECHNICAL NOTES: Before using any of these options to power down your computer, save your files and make sure the drive-inuse lights are off. If you change your mind and decide to continue working, wait a few seconds before turning the computer on again.
