PCMCIA card Personal Computer Memory Card International Association card. A credit-card-sized device used for data storage, memory expansion, or other purposes. PCMCIA cards are often used in notebook computers and PCMCIA card readers. Port A physical socket on a computer to which you can connect a peripheral device. Power- on diagnostics Tests stored in ROM that the computer runs to check its internal circuitry, peripheral device configuration, and operating status each time you turn it on or reset it. Processor A small CPU on one semiconductor chip. See also CPU. RAM Random Access Memory. The area of the computer's memory used to run programs and store data while you work. All data in RAM is erased when you turn off or reset the computer. Real-time clock A battery-powered clock inside the computer that tracks the time and date, even when the computer is turned off. Refresh rate The frequency with which a monitor can redraw a screen image. The faster the refresh rate, the less the screen will flicker. 6 Glossary
