The CLEAN/MEDIA LED on the tape drive front panel will flash when the drive needs cleaning. Under typical conditions, the drive should seldom require cleaning. However, high duty cycles and adverse environmental conditions may require the drive to be cleaned on a regular basis to ensure optimum performance is maintained, and it is therefore considered good practice to clean the drive approximately every two weeks. IMPORTANT: It is essential to use only DLT VS or DLT1 cleaning cartridges with HP Surestore DLT VS80 tape drives. Cleaning cartridges from other media manufacturers will not be accepted by the drive (see the media compatibility page for full details). Use of HP cleaning media will ensure your tape drive is fully protected. cleaning cartridge You must use only DLT VS or DLT1 cleaning cartridges to clean the tape heads (see Ordering Information). A cleaning cartridge is supplied with each tape drive. Do not use swabs or other means of cleaning the heads. The cleaning cartridge uses a special tape to clean the tape heads. A cleaning cartridge can be used up to 20 times. The cleaning cartridge includes a label with 20 small boxes printed on it. Always place a check mark in a box each time you use the cartridge to clean the drive. Replace the cleaning cartridge when all the boxes are checked. cleaning the tape heads on a drive The drive's TapeAlert feature sends a message to your backup application when the tape heads need cleaning and the Clean/Media LED flashes. To clean the tape heads: 1. Insert a DLT VS or DLT1 cleaning cartridge into the drive. The tape drive automatically loads the cartridge and cleans the heads. Note: If you insert another type of cleaning cartridge, the Clean/Media LED turns off and no cleaning will be performed. Ensure that cleaning is performed only with DLT VS or DLT1 cleaning cartridges. During the cleaning cycle the Clean/Media LED flashes. At the end of the cleaning cycle, the Clean/Media LED turns off to indicate that you should remove the cleaning cartridge. The cleaning cycle can take several minutes. 2. Remove the cleaning cartridge from the drive. If the Clean/Media LED starts to flash when you insert a DLTtape cartridge immediately after cleaning, try a new DLTtape cartridge.
