13 Troubleshooting and 13 Routine Maintenance Troubleshooting IMPORTANT For technical and operational assistance, you must call the country where you purchased the printer. Calls must be made from within that country. Error Messages You may occasionally encounter a difficulty with your FAX/MFC or telephone line. If this happens, your FAX/MFC often identifies the problem and displays an error message. The list below explains the most common error messages. You can correct most problems yourself. If you need additional help, call the Brother fax-back system at In USA: 1-800-521-2846 In Canada: 1-800-681-9838 1-514-685-5381 (in Montreal) ERROR MESSAGE CAUSE ACTION CHANGE DRUM SOON The drum unit is near the end of its life. Use the drum unit until you have a print quality problem, then replace the drum unit with a new one. CHECK PAPER The FAX/MFC is out of Refill the paper or paper or paper is not remove the paper and properly loaded in the load it again and then multi-purpose sheet feeder. press Fax Start. CHECK PAPER SIZE Your Paper Size setting may not be set correctly for the paper you are using (see pages 4-1). Change either paper in multipurpose sheet feeder or change paper size setting, and then press Fax Start. COMM. ERROR A poor quality phone line caused communications error. Try the call again. CONNECTION FAIL You tried to poll a fax machine that is not in Polled Waiting mode. Verify the other party's polling setup.
