Removing a microprocessor Complete the following steps to remove a microprocessor. Note: v Read "Installation guidelines" on page 29. v Read the safety notices at "Safety information" on page 107. v Read "Handling static-sensitive devices" on page 30. 1. Turn off the server and disconnect all power cords and external cables; then, remove the server cover (see "Removing the cover and bezel" on page 32). 2. Identify the microprocessor to be removed. Note: The illustrations in this document might differ slightly from your hardware. Captive screws Microprocessor Heat-sink Heat sink retention module Microprocessorlocking lever Microprocessor socket 3. Remove the heat sink: a. Loosen one captive screw fully; then, loosen the other captive screw. Attention: Loosening one screw fully before loosening the other screw will help to break the thermal bond that adheres the heat sink to the microprocessor. b. Pull the heat sink off of the microprocessor. 4. Rotate the locking lever on the microprocessor socket from its closed and locked position until it stops or clicks in the fully open position. 5. Pull the microprocessor out of the socket. To install a microprocessor, see "Installing an additional microprocessor" on page 44.
