Using printer menus Serial Use this menu selection to change printer settings affecting jobs sent to the printer through an optional serial port. Menu selection PCL SmartSwitch Purpose Values Configures the printer so it On* automatically switches to PCL emulation when a print job Off received through the serial port requires it, regardless of the default printer language. PS SmartSwitch Configures the printer so it On* automatically switches to PostScript emulation when a Off print job received through the serial port requires it, regardless of the default printer language. NPA Mode Serial Buffer Specifies whether the printer performs the special processing required for bidirectional communication, following the conventions defined in the Network Printing Alliance (NPA) Protocol. Note: Changing this menu item automatically resets the printer. On Off Auto* Configures the size of the serial input buffer. Note: Changing the Serial Buffer menu item automatically resets the printer. Disabled Auto* 3K to maximum size allowed Job Buffering Temporarily stores jobs on the printer hard disk before printing. Note: Changing the Job Buffering menu item automatically resets the printer. Off* On Auto On*-The printer examines the data at the serial interface and selects PCL emulation if the data indicates that is the required printer language. Off-The printer does not examine the incoming data. The printer uses PostScript emulation to process the job if PS SmartSwitch is On, or uses the default printer language specified in the Setup Menu if PS SmartSwitch is Off. On*-The printer examines the data at the serial interface and selects PostScript emulation if the data indicates that is the required printer language. Off-The printer does not examine the incoming data. The printer uses PCL emulation to process the job if PCL SmartSwitch is On, or uses the default printer language specified in the Setup Menu if PCL SmartSwitch is Off. Printer performs NPA processing. If data is not in NPA format, it is rejected as bad data. Printer does not perform NPA processing. Printer examines the data to determine the format and then processes it appropriately. Disables job buffering. Any jobs already buffered on the disk are printed before normal processing of incoming jobs resumes. Printer automatically calculates the Serial Buffer size (recommended setting). User specifies the Serial Buffer size. The maximum size depends on the amount of memory in the printer, the size of the other link buffers, and whether Resource Save is set to On or Off. To maximize the range for the Serial Buffer size, disable or reduce the size of the parallel and USB buffers. Does not buffer print jobs to the hard disk. Buffers print jobs to the hard disk. Buffers print jobs only if the printer is busy processing data from another input port. 36
