Note There might be an additional charge for configuring the line to support some of these features. Check with your service provider. North America Switch Types The following section describes the switch types commonly found inside North America that are compatible with Cisco 700 series routers. National ISDN-1 National ISDN-1 (NI1) switches comply with established National ISDN standards. This type of line is supported by AT&T, Lucent, Northern Telecom, and other manufacturers' switches. Note Switches that comply with the NI1 standard provide the best performance with Cisco 700 series voice-priority feature. If possible, order this type of ISDN line from your service provider. Lucent 5ESS Custom Lucent 5ESS switches can run in custom mode, in addition to NI1 mode. Custom mode allows the switch to be configured to operate in either a point-to-point or a multipoint configuration. Point-to-point configuration supports one piece of terminal equipment on the ISDN line and does not require Service Profile Identifiers (SPIDs). Multipoint configuration supports multiple pieces of terminal equipment on the same ISDN line and requires SPIDs. Northern Telecom DMS-100 Custom Northern Telecom DMS-100 switches support a custom mode used with older terminal equipment. Provisioning the ISDN BRI Line C-3

Note
There might be an additional charge for configuring the line to support some of these
features. Check with your service provider.
North America Switch Types
The following section describes the switch types commonly found inside North America
that are compatible with Cisco 700 series routers.
National ISDN-1
National ISDN-1 (NI1) switches comply with established National ISDN standards. This
type of line is supported by AT&T, Lucent, Northern Telecom, and other manufacturers’
switches.
Note
Switches that comply with the NI1 standard provide the best performance with
Cisco 700 series voice-priority feature. If possible, order this type of ISDN line from your
service provider.
Lucent 5ESS Custom
Lucent 5ESS switches can run in custom mode, in addition to NI1 mode.
Custom mode allows the switch to be configured to operate in either a point-to-point or a
multipoint configuration. Point-to-point configuration supports one piece of terminal
equipment on the ISDN line and does not require Service Profile Identifiers (SPIDs).
Multipoint configuration supports multiple pieces of terminal equipment on the same ISDN
line and requires SPIDs.
Northern Telecom DMS-100 Custom
Northern Telecom DMS-100 switches support a custom mode used with older terminal
equipment.
