Solving Hardware Problems Problem Possible Cause Solution New device is not recognized as part of the computer system. The system did not automatically configure the new device. In Windows 95, doubleclick the Add New Hardware icon in Control Panel. Refer to the documentation that came with the new device for installation instructions. Cables of new external device are loose or power cord is not plugged in. Ensure that all cables are properly and securely connected and that the power cord is plugged into an electrical outlet. Power switch of external device is not turned on. Turn on the external device. Turn off the computer, turn on the device, then turn the computer on. Cannot access a removable drive. A removable drive is not seated properly. In Windows 95, shut down the computer, remove and reinsert the drive, then turn on the computer. In Windows NT, you do not have to shut down the computer to insert a diskette drive or CD-ROM drive. Run Computer Checkup to test the drive (see Chapter 16). Computer beeps four times when turned on, power/suspend light is on, but screen remains blank. Memory expansion board(s) has been installed incorrectly or has lost connection. Follow the steps in Chapter 12 to remove and reinsert the memory expansion board(s).
