4 Installing Mass Storage Devices Introduction This chapter describes how to install the internal mass storage devices, including the internal hard disk drives (IDE or SCSI) and the optional tape backup (DAT) drive. The HP Tower Server tc2100 comes standard with one flexible disk drive, one IDE CD-ROM, and at least one SCSI or IDE hard disk drive, depending on the model. The removable mass storage cage can hold two hard disk drives with provisions for a third hard disk drive installed into the fourth drive bay located just behind the upper front bezel. Please refer to the appropriate topics listed in this chapter according to your Server configuration (IDE or SCSI). Tools Required The following tools may be needed to attach the mass storage devices to the drive trays or drive cage. Check the mass storage device's documentation for additional tool requirements. • Torx T-15 driver • ¼-inch flat blade screwdriver Mass Storage Guidelines • General Guidelines o Use care when unpacking and handling the hard disk drives. The hard disk drives are very susceptible to mechanical shock and can be easily damaged by a drop as short as one-quarter of an inch. If the drop would crack an egg, it will damage the drive. o Do not stack drives. o The Server is internally limited to 6 mass storage shelves. The flexible disk drive and CD-ROM drive, which are standard on all models of the HP Server tc2100, occupy shelves 1 and 2 respectively. The first four mass storage shelves may also be referred to as common trays, or drive trays. See Figure 4-1. 23

Installing Mass Storage Devices
Introduction
This chapter describes how to install the internal mass storage devices, including
the internal hard disk drives (IDE or SCSI) and the optional tape backup (DAT)
drive. The HP Tower Server tc2100 comes standard with one flexible disk drive,
one IDE CD-ROM, and at least one SCSI or IDE hard disk drive, depending on
the model.
The removable mass storage cage can hold two hard disk drives with provisions
for a third hard disk drive installed into the fourth drive bay located just behind the
upper front bezel.
Please refer to the appropriate topics listed in this chapter according to your Server
configuration (IDE or SCSI).
Tools Required
The following tools may be needed to attach the mass storage devices to the drive
trays or drive cage. Check the mass storage device's documentation for additional
tool requirements.
Torx T-15 driver
¼-inch flat blade screwdriver
Mass Storage Guidelines
General Guidelines
o
Use care when unpacking and handling the hard disk drives.
The hard disk drives are very susceptible to mechanical shock and can be
easily damaged by a drop as short as one-quarter of an inch. If the drop
would crack an egg, it will damage the drive.
o
Do not stack drives.
o
The Server is internally limited to 6 mass storage shelves.
The flexible disk drive and CD-ROM drive, which are standard on all
models of the HP Server tc2100, occupy shelves 1 and 2 respectively. The
first four mass storage shelves may also be referred to as common trays, or
drive trays. See Figure 4-1.
