Replacing
the
microprocessor
This
procedure
describes
how
to
remove
and
replace
the
microprocessor.
The
procedure
varies
depending
upon
the
machine
type.
Types
7816,
7817,
9686
and
9687
Important
The
heat
sink
and
microprocessor
might
be
very
hot.
Make
sure
these
components
are
cool
enough
to
safely
handle
before
continuing
this
procedure.
1.
Remove
the
cover.
See
“Removing
the
cover”
on
page
123.
2.
Place
the
computer
on
its
right
side
to
help
make
the
microprocessor
more
accessible.
3.
Disconnect
the
heat
sink
and
fan
assembly
cable
from
the
system
board.
See
the
system
board
illustration
for
your
machine
type
at
“Locating
parts
on
the
system
board”
on
page
125.
4.
Rotate
handle
±1²
to
release
the
heat
sink
clamp
and
then
disengage
the
clamp
from
the
plastic
retention
bracket.
5.
Lift
the
heat
sink
and
fan
assembly
off
the
system
board.
Place
the
heat
sink
on
its
side
so
that
the
thermal
grease
does
not
come
in
contact
with
anything.
