Multifrequency monitor A monitor that accepts input at different frequencies and can display in a variety of resolutions. Multitasking The ability of a computer and an operating system to work on more than one command or task at a time. The tasks are actually not performed at the same time, but they are assigned priorities and rapidly processed by the computer in sequential order. See also OS/2 and UNIX. Numeric keypad The number and cursor control keys grouped together on the right side of the keyboard. The operation of the dual-use keys on the numeric keypad is controlled by the (-1 key. Operating speed The speed at which the computer's processor can execute commands, usually expressed in megahertz (MHz), such as 33 MHz. See also Megahertz. Operating system A collection of programs that manage a computer's operations, such as interpreting input, managing files, and reading and writing data to disk. The operating system (such as MS-DOS, OS/2, or UNIX) provides the foundation for the other programs you use and controls the usage of the hardware resources. Glossary 25
