Icon Setting Description A Auto The camera measures the available light and fires the flash if necessary. Flash Off The camera will not fire the flash. Flash On Night The camera always fires the flash. If the light is behind your subject, you can use this setting to increase the light on the front of your subject. (This is called "fill-flash.") The camera fires the flash to illuminate objects in the foreground. It then continues to expose as if the flash had not fired to gather the background. This setting only works when taking pictures of still objects. You may also want to use a tripod for better results. NOTE With each of the flash settings, you can also set Redeye Reduction to On in the Capture menu. When Red-eye Reduction is On, you will see the Red-eye Reduction icon displayed with the icon for the flash setting in the status screen and in Live View. To turn Red-eye Reduction On, see Red-eye reduction on page 43. NOTE Only the Flash Off and Flash On settings are available when you set the Exposure Mode dial to Aperture Priority Av.
