Attention: To maintain proper system cooling, do not operate the BladeCenter unit for more than 1 minute without a blade server or filler blade installed in each blade bay. IDE drive Tray Riser card IDE connector 2 (J2) Short screws IDE connector 1 (J1) Attention: v Drives must be installed in the following order: IDE connector 1 (J1) first, then IDE connector 2 (J2). v Do not install a hard disk drive in IDE connector 2 if you intend to also install an optional I/O expansion card. The I/O expansion card occupies the same area as the second IDE hard disk drive. v Do not press on the top of the hard disk drive when installing it. Pressing the top could damage the hard disk drive. v IDE hard disk drives must be set to primary (master). See the documentation that came with your hard disk drive for instructions. Complete the following steps to install a 2.5-inch IDE hard disk drive: 1. Read the safety information beginning on page v and "Installation guidelines" on page 19. 2. If the blade server is operating, shut down the operating system by typing the shutdown -h now command. If the blade server was not turned off, press the power-control button (behind the blade-server control-panel door) to turn off the blade server. See "The control panel buttons and LEDs" on page 13 for more information about the location of the power-control button. 3. Remove the blade server from the BladeCenter unit. (See "Removing the blade server from the BladeCenter unit" on page 21 for instructions.) Carefully place the blade server on a flat, static-protective surface. 4. Open the blade server cover. See "Opening the blade server cover" on page 22 for instructions. 5. Insert the riser card from the option kit into an IDE connector on the blade server system board. Chapter 4.
