9. If this is not the initial installation of this blade server in the BladeCenter unit, continue with the next step. If this is the initial installation of this blade server in the BladeCenter unit, you must perform the following additional tasks: a. Configure the BladeCenter unit for Serial Over LAN (SOL) support (see the IBM BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Serial Over LAN Setup Guide). b. Turn on the blade server by pressing the power-control button on the blade server control panel. The power-on LED on the blade server changes from the slowly-flashing state to a continuously lit (steady) state. c. Establish a Telnet connection and an SOL session to enable communication between the blade server and a monitor, keyboard, and mouse. The BladeCenter unit contains a video connector for attaching a monitor. However, the blade server does not contain a video controller. You must establish an SOL connection to the blade server for console output. You can do this remotely through a separate client system that uses the Telnet program. For additional information about SOL requirements, see the IBM BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Serial Over LAN Setup Guide. For additional information about monitors, see the BladeCenter unit Installation and User's Guide. d. Install the operating system. Use the installation instructions that come with the operating system, or download the latest operating-system installation instructions from the IBM Support Web page at http://www.ibm.com/ support/. For more information, see Chapter 6, "Installing the operating system," on page 45. 10. If you have already installed the operating system on the blade server, configured the BladeCenter components for SOL support, and established an SOL session, the blade server is ready to use. If you have not already done so, turn on the blade server by pressing the power-control button on the blade server control panel. The power-on LED on the blade server changes from the slowly-flashing state to a continuously lit (steady) state. 11. If you have other blade servers to install, you can do so now. Input/output connectors and devices The BladeCenter unit contains the input/output connectors that are available to the blade server. See the documentation that comes with the BladeCenter unit for information about the input/output connectors. The blade server does not support a direct connection to a monitor, keyboard, or mouse. Therefore, to enable communication between the blade server and these devices, you must perform the configuration tasks that are described in Chapter 5, "Configuration requirements for the blade server," on page 35 and the IBM BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Serial Over LAN Setup Guide. 9.
If
this
is
not
the
initial
installation
of
this
blade
server
in
the
BladeCenter
unit,
continue
with
the
next
step.
If
this
is
the
initial
installation
of
this
blade
server
in
the
BladeCenter
unit,
you
must
perform
the
following
additional
tasks:
a.
Configure
the
BladeCenter
unit
for
Serial
Over
LAN
(SOL)
support
(see
the
IBM
BladeCenter
and
BladeCenter
T
Serial
Over
LAN
Setup
Guide
).
b.
Turn
on
the
blade
server
by
pressing
the
power-control
button
on
the
blade
server
control
panel.
The
power-on
LED
on
the
blade
server
changes
from
the
slowly-flashing
state
to
a
continuously
lit
(steady)
state.
c.
Establish
a
Telnet
connection
and
an
SOL
session
to
enable
communication
between
the
blade
server
and
a
monitor,
keyboard,
and
mouse.
The
BladeCenter
unit
contains
a
video
connector
for
attaching
a
monitor.
However,
the
blade
server
does
not
contain
a
video
controller.
You
must
establish
an
SOL
connection
to
the
blade
server
for
console
output.
You
can
do
this
remotely
through
a
separate
client
system
that
uses
the
Telnet
program.
For
additional
information
about
SOL
requirements,
see
the
IBM
BladeCenter
and
BladeCenter
T
Serial
Over
LAN
Setup
Guide
.
For
additional
information
about
monitors,
see
the
BladeCenter
unit
Installation
and
User’s
Guide
.
d.
Install
the
operating
system.
Use
the
installation
instructions
that
come
with
the
operating
system,
or
download
the
latest
operating-system
installation
instructions
from
the
IBM
Support
Web
page
at
support/.
For
more
information,
see
Chapter
6,
“Installing
the
operating
system,”
on
page
45.
10.
If
you
have
already
installed
the
operating
system
on
the
blade
server,
configured
the
BladeCenter
components
for
SOL
support,
and
established
an
SOL
session,
the
blade
server
is
ready
to
use.
If
you
have
not
already
done
so,
turn
on
the
blade
server
by
pressing
the
power-control
button
on
the
blade
server
control
panel.
The
power-on
LED
on
the
blade
server
changes
from
the
slowly-flashing
state
to
a
continuously
lit
(steady)
state.
11.
If
you
have
other
blade
servers
to
install,
you
can
do
so
now.
Input/output
connectors
and
devices
The
BladeCenter
unit
contains
the
input/output
connectors
that
are
available
to
the
blade
server.
See
the
documentation
that
comes
with
the
BladeCenter
unit
for
information
about
the
input/output
connectors.
The
blade
server
does
not
support
a
direct
connection
to
a
monitor,
keyboard,
or
mouse.
Therefore,
to
enable
communication
between
the
blade
server
and
these
devices,
you
must
perform
the
configuration
tasks
that
are
described
in
Chapter
5,
“Configuration
requirements
for
the
blade
server,”
on
page
35
