Using the Serial Over LAN (SOL) feature on the blade server In addition to performing the configuration tasks in this chapter, you must perform the following SOL tasks. These tasks are described in the IBM BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Serial Over LAN Setup Guide: v Update and configure BladeCenter components for SOL operation using the management-module Web-based management and configuration program v Configure the BladeCenter unit to operate using SOL v Enable the SOL feature for the blade server v Establish an SOL connection The blade server has built-in support for the SOL feature. However, the SOL feature works only if it is enabled for the BladeCenter unit and the blade server. If the SOL feature is not already enabled for the blade server, you must enable the SOL feature. You must establish an SOL connection and start an SOL session on the blade server before you can perform the following activities: v Establish a communications channel to the blade server v Install the operating system on the blade server v Have the blade server serviced To support the SOL feature and to make sure that your blade server is correctly auto-configured, you must install a compatible Ethernet switch module in I/O bay 1 of the BladeCenter unit. Examples of compatible Ethernet switch modules are the IBM 4-Port Gb Ethernet Switch Module for BladeCenter and the Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 GbE Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter. For more information about installing, configuring, and using these switch modules, see the following documentation: v IBM 4-Port Gb Ethernet Switch Module for BladeCenter Installation and User's Guide v Nortel Networks Layer 2-7 GbE Switch Module for IBM BladeCenter Installation Guide v BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Management Module Command-Line Interface Reference Guide v IBM BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Serial Over LAN Setup Guide The SOL feature is accessed through the management-module command-line interface. For information about using the command-line interface, see the BladeCenter and BladeCenter T Management Module Command-Line Interface Reference Guide. Notes: v The BladeCenter unit needs to be configured only once. v If your blade server contains a different type of optional Ethernet-compatible switch module in I/O bay 1 than the switch modules that are mentioned in this chapter, see the documentation that comes with the Ethernet switch module that you are using. 36 BladeCenter JS20 Type 8842: Installation and User's Guide

on
the

In
addition
to
performing
the
configuration
tasks
in
this
chapter,
you
must
perform
the
following
SOL
tasks.
These
tasks
are
described
in
the
IBM
BladeCenter
and
BladeCenter
T
Serial
Over
LAN
Setup
Guide
:
v
Update
and
configure
BladeCenter
components
for
SOL
operation
using
the
management-module
Web-based
management
and
configuration
program
v
Configure
the
BladeCenter
unit
to
operate
using
SOL
v
Enable
the
SOL
feature
for
the
blade
server
v
Establish
an
SOL
connection
The
blade
server
has
built-in
support
for
the
SOL
feature.
However,
the
SOL
feature
works
only
if
it
is
enabled
for
the
BladeCenter
unit
and
the
blade
server.
If
the
SOL
feature
is
not
already
enabled
for
the
blade
server,
you
must
enable
the
SOL
feature.
You
must
establish
an
SOL
connection
and
start
an
SOL
session
on
the
blade
server
before
you
can
perform
the
following
activities:
v
Establish
a
communications
channel
to
the
blade
server
v
Install
the
operating
system
on
the
blade
server
v
Have
the
blade
server
serviced
To
support
the
SOL
feature
and
to
make
sure
that
your
blade
server
is
correctly
auto-configured,
you
must
install
a
compatible
Ethernet
switch
module
in
I/O
bay
1
of
the
BladeCenter
unit.
Examples
of
compatible
Ethernet
switch
modules
are
the

Module
for
BladeCenter
and
the
Nortel
