148 Exploring Your Computer's Features Exploring audio features To adjust the volume: ❖ For external speakers, use the volume control on the speakers in conjunction with the volume control on the computer. ❖ For headphones, use the computer's volume control dial. Recording sounds You may record sounds and save them as .wav files using the built-in microphone or an external microphone. The easiest way to record is through the computer's built-in microphone. DEFINITION: A .WAV (pronounced "wave") file is one of the formats for storing sound in files. TECHNICAL NOTE: If you record MP3 files, you can only play them on a device capable of playing MP3 files. You may also record sounds as .WAV files by connecting other sound sources to the microphone jack. Using a microphone To record sounds using the microphone: 1 If you want to use an external microphone, connect it to the computer as described in "Connecting an external microphone" on page 149. 2 Click Start, All Programs, Accessories, Entertainment, then Sound Recorder. The Sound Recorder screen displays.
