Operating Basics Modem Selection If the computer cannot recognize the internal modem, a dialog box is displayed. Select the COM port for your modem to use. Dialing Properties Select this item to display the dialing properties. If you are using the computer in Japan, the Telecommunications Business Law requires that you select Japan region mode. It is illegal to use the modem in Japan with any other selection. Connecting To connect the modular cable, follow the steps below. The modular cable that comes with the computer must be used to connect a modem. Connect the end of the modular cable with the core to the computer. ■ In case of a lightning storm, unplug the modular cable from the telephone jack. ■ Do not connect the modem to a digital telephone line. A digital line will damage the modem. 1. Plug one end of the modular cable into the computer's modem jack. 2. Plug the other end of the modular cable into a telephone jack. If you use a storage device such as an optical drive or HDD connected to a 16-bit PC card, you might experience the following modem problems: ■ Modem speed is slow or communication is interrupted. ■ Skips may occur in sound. 4-22 User's Manual
