Glossary free space/segment See available space/segment. H hard disk, hard drive Basic unit of nonvolatile, nonremovable, magnetic storage media. See also disk drive. hot spare A hard drive, an array member, that is not used in day-to-day data storage but, instead, is reserved for use as a replacement for one of the other drives in the array in the event of a failure. hot swap To remove a component from a system and install a new component while the power is on and the system is running. I impacted An impacted array is one which has been created but for some reason the initial build operation did not complete. All member drives are present and operational, and all data written to the array is protected.
